A Culinary Journey Around the World
In just five months, Bodega 13 has become the “go-to” destination for creative cuisine, tasteful decor and fun experiences. Newlyweds Larry and Emily Foppe brought their love of travel and delicious food to Scottsdale, opening a new restaurant that takes diners on a gastronomical journey around the world. Just browsing the menu will make one feel like they’re reading a travel brochure and leave them planning their next visit to try another item; or to enjoy the delightful experience of dining at the Chef’s table, fire table, quaint bar, an intimate booth or on the patio with spectacular views of Pinnacle Peak.
Larry, a successful entrepreneur, is no novice at being a restaurateur, which is evident in all the wonderful details that come together to create just the right atmosphere.
“The ambiance is quiet, comfortable and allows our guests to enjoy their dining experience,” explains Larry.
The tasteful décor becomes apparent when you enter through two beautiful, distressed doors with speakeasy windows. There’s the glass wine room and a cozy bar. Plus, a charming fireplace—a replica of a design the Foppes saw while honeymooning in New Zealand. Proudly on display are also three gorgeous, 100-year-old barn doors from a barn in Iowa that lead into the private dining room.
Emily, new to Arizona, adds quaint southern charm and a warm sense of hospitality to the dining experience, as she and Larry welcome each guest as if entering their own home.
Tapas & More
The international menu at Bodega 13 has something for everyone—from small plates to full entrees—and does not disappoint. There’s a wide selection of cold and hot tapas, Old World Paellas and delicious entrees, and soups and salads for those looking for classic favorites.
Executive Chef Nick Muller helms the kitchen. His passion for cooking started at age 12, having been raised in a German family that owned a café, with a grandfather who made wine.
“I feel that the love of food and wine runs deep in my heritage and blood,” shares Chef Nick. “The true sense of love and togetherness was, and will always be, felt most around the dinner table.”
Chef Nick has also studied under many talented chefs from around the world—including Germany, France, Italy the Middle East and South America— combining these cooking styles to create an international menu that allows guests to sample authentic cuisine without leaving Arizona.
As Larry further explains, “Our international cuisine menu is a welcome break from traditional bar food.”
I highly recommend the Around the World Sampler, which includes duck tacos, stuffed dates, shrimp and chorizo, and curry chicken. My first bite into the incredibly delicious stuffed dates had me hooked, and I could clearly see why it’s such a popular item on the menu. Plus, the tacos and shrimp and curry chicken were amazing. Other tapas include lamb lollipops from the Caribbean, beef tenderloin from France, honey shrimp from Spain and seafood martini from England.
Adding an element of surprise is the Tahitian Pearl, a decadent dessert the Foppes recreated, having first tasted it on a trip to Tahiti. It’s beautifully presented and a delicious ending to any meal.
Also be sure to stop by on a Sunday morning for the wide selection of tasty brunch items, including the Bodega omelet, biscuits and gravy, crepe du jour, chicken and waffles, eggs benedict and spiced French toast.
All who dine at Bodega 13 are sure to find it to be a unique and enjoyable experience that offers a plethora of tastes; beautifully prepared, around the world cuisine; and a wonderful selection of specialty cocktails, international wines and craft beers.
